I was working at my coffee stand when I heard the news and promptly closed up stand. At the time I was the 6p-10p DJ at KSPN in Aspen (which had a very large contingent of Dead Heads) so I called my Program Director and told her that unless they allowed me to do a tribute show to celebrate Jerry's life, I would be calling in sick because I couldn't envision myself going through the motions. She agreed, so when I arrived at 6p, I informed the audience what I was going to do. Because it was a commercial station, I played all the commercials for the four hours at the beginning of the show and then proceeded to play 4 hours of a mix of released music and boots (Dead, And Jerry's Other projects), with calls from listeners and personal memories interspiced. About halfway through, the GM, Lynn Scott (who also loved the Dead) called and said that he would have prefferred to have waited til that weekend to do a tribute and get sponsors for the show, but since I was already paying tribute, he wanted to join me on-air. He arrived a little while later and we continued for the next few hours, with music, phone calls and our remembrences including more than a few choked up moments and tears, especially during Stella, Brokedown, Dew etc. We decided to end the night on an up note so we played Touch Of Grey from the album and Stagger Lee > Aiko from the Zoo 9/2/85 to wrap up the show. I was grateful that I was able to help remember and grieve with the whole community and will never forget that night.
